Abstract

1418344 Valves A WOBIG 28 Feb 1973 [1 March 1972] 9831/73 Heading F2V [Also in Division F4] A valve for controlling a hot water radiator in a single-pipe heating system has an inlet connection 14 to the main supply pipe, an outlet connection 19 and a two-way connector 18 for the supply to and the return from the radiator, the return flow being via a guide piece 24, which is of poor heat-conducting material and may be extended as necessary by an immersion tube 15. The hollow axially sliding valve member 16 is guided by the member 13. As shown, the valve is positioned to cut off the return flow from the radiator, gap 17 being closed, and to open direct by-pass flow between the inlet and outlet connections 14, 19. If the valve member 16 is moved to contact heating surface 20 bypass flow is cut off and the gap 17 opened to per mit flow through the radiator. The guide member 13 extends into the chamber 12 and the annular gap a is made equal to or smaller than the gap b so that dirt particles cannot flow through the gap a and block the valve when it is opened to provide by-pass flow i.e. when the radiator is cut off. These particles are, instead, retained within the chamber 12 until the valve is next operated to provide flow into the radiator whereupon any retained particles are washed through and deposited in the radiator. Various embodiments of the guide piece are described, some including devices to suppress convection currents.
