Abstract

1418025 Silver-base electrical contact materials SQUARE D CO 9 March 1973 [15 March 1972] 12189/72 Headings C7A and C7D An electrical contact material consists by weight of:- 2.5 to 20% cadmium oxide not more than 3% caesuim and optionally up to 3% mercury the balance being silver. Caesuim-containing materials are produced by mixing cadmium oxide and silver powders; adding a solution of a caesium compound to form a slurry; air drying the slurry at e.g. 60 C; sieving the dried powder mixture; compacting and sintering. Preferred caesuim compounds are caesuim nitrate, caesuim carbonate caesuim iodide in propanol. Mercury and caesuim-containing materials are produced by mixing cadmium oxide, mercuric oxide and silver powders; reducing the mixture in, e.g. hydrogen at 200-700‹C to produce a silver-cadmium; mercury alloy; internally oxidizing the cadmium; sieving the resulting mixture; incorporating a caesuim-compound solution fo form a slurry; airdrying and sieving the powder again; compacting and then sintering in a pressurized enclosure to prevent undesirable loss of mercury.
