A negative electrode for an alkaline secondary cell consists of a compound mixture of a conductive metal powder, a negative active material and solid NaOH or (preferably) solid KOH. Fe or Ni are examples of conductive powders and CdO or Cd(OH) 2 of active materials. Primary electrodes containing Zn may also be made in this way. The solid NaOH or KOH dissolves in use to give a highly porous electrode.
