Abstract

1417799 Hydraulic moulding press PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 22 May 1973 [25 May 1972] 24275/73 Heading B5A [Also in Division G3] An hydraulic press for pressing synthetic resin in a mould 7 comprises a piston 2 movable in a cylinder 1, means connected to the piston 2 for transmitting force from the piston 2 to the material in the mould 7, means including a servo valve 20 for supplying and withdrawing liquid to and from spaces 14, 21 on opposed sides of the piston 2, a first device for measuring the force transmitted by the transmitting means and a second device 32 for measuring the speed of the transmitting means, the output signals from these devices being applied to a control unit 31 in which the measured values of force and speed are compared with reference values and which controls the servo valve 20 so that the speed is maintained at the reference value as long as the force remains below the reference value and when the latter value is reached the force is controlled so that it does not exceed the reference value. The first device may measure the force on the rod 8 at reference 30 or the pressure in the mould 7. The transmitting means may comprise the rod 3 of piston 2, a hydrostatic thrust bearing and a plunger 8 for pressing the material in the mould 7. The thrust bearing which permits transverse play for the rod 8 may comprise a chamber 9 provided on the rod 8 and a plate 10 mounted on the rod 3 and provided with pressure chambers defined by recesses 11 which receive liquid from the space 14 via duct 12 and restrictions 13. The mould 7 may incorporate a pressure transducer which, when a desired pressure is reached in the mould 7, actuates control unit 31 to ensure the pressure is maintained.
