Abstract
1416807 Hydrolysis of acrylonitrile polymers CESKOSLOVENSKA AKADEMIE VED 5 July 1973 [14 July 1972] 32143/73 Heading C3P Acrylonitrile polymers and copolymers, free from acrylamide and methacrylamide, are hydrolysed by (1) heating with 50-70% nitric acid at 25-60‹ C. for 10 minutes to 24 hours, and then (2) cooling the mixture to - 10‹ to + 20‹ C. and maintaining this temperature for a time sufficient for the required degree of hydrolysis to be effected. Preformed polymers may be dissolved in nitric acid and hydrolysed, or the polymers may be produced in nitric acid solution and hydrolysis effected in situ in the same solution. In examples hydrolysis is effected on (1) preformed polyacrylonitrile, (2) preformed acrylonitrile/n-butyl acrylate copolymer, (3) polyacrylonitrile formed in situ and (4) acrylonitrile/styrene copolymer formed in situ.
