Abstract
1416808 Hydrolysis of acrylonitrile polymers CESKOSLOVENSKA AKADEMIE VED 5 July 1973 [14 July 1972] 32144/73 Heading C3P Polyacrylonitrile, and copolymers of acrylonitrile with up to 15 mol per cent of other monomers, are hydrolysed by (i) adding the polymer to agitated nitric acid of 50-72% concentration at a temperature of -15‹ to - 50‹ C. to form a suspension of pasty consistency, and (ii) warming the mixture to - 5‹ to + 40‹ C. and maintaining it at this temperature for a time sufficient to effect the required degree of hydrolysis. The second stage may be effected in a mould. Examples describe the hydrolysis of polyacrylonitrile, acrylonitrile / acrylamide copolymer, acrylonitrile / acrolein / acrylamide copolymer and acrylonitrile/n-butyl acrylate copolymer.
