Abstract

1416231 Conjugate polyamide filaments E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 4 Jan 1973 [5 Jan 1972] 621/73 Heading B5B [Also in Division C3] One component of an eccentric conjugate filament consists essentially of poly(hexamethylenedodecanedioamide) and another escentially of N-alkyl substituted poly(hexamethylenedodecanedioamide) wherein 25 to 50% of the polyamide nitrogen atoms have alkyl substituents. Preferably the second component is a copolymer consisting of 15 to 50% hexamethylenedodecanoamide units and 25 to 50% N,N<SP>1</SP>-dialkylhexamethy lenedodecanedioamide units. The preferred alkyl groups are ethyl and nbutyl. The filaments are produced by conjugate melt-spinning, quenching and drawing, passing the filament under low tension through a heating zone to develop crimp and then stretching to remove crimp. The first drawing step is preferably a twostage one and the tension in the heating zone is preferably released by passing the filament around a series of snubbing pins to a roll driven at a lower peripheral speed than the draw roll. The filaments can be crimped at 100‹ C. in steam and show a high degree of crimp elongation.
