Abstract

1416221 Article gripping apparatus DAINI SEIKOSHA KK 31 Jan 1973 4858/73 Heading B8H A pneumatically operated device for gripping articles and which is suitable for use in an industrial robot comprises a first hollow cylinder 8 which is secured to a hollow tube 1 and a second hollow cylinder 2 rotatably disposed in coaxial relation to the cylinder 8, an arm 10 being disposed in the space between the cylinders 2, 8 and having a cylinder 12 mounted therein which has a piston 14 operable to actuate a pair of article gripping jaws 17A, 17B located at the free end of the arm 10, Fig. 3. The jaws 17A, 17B are normally biased by a spring 19 to their open position but on supplying compressed air through a conduit 20 and through the interiors of the cylinder 2 and an inner tube 11 to the cylinder 12 the piston 14 is moved leftwardly in Fig. 1 whereby a tapered portion 15 thereof enters between the inner ends of the jaws 17A, 17B causing them to pivot inwardly about respective shafts 18A, 18B to an article engagement position. The arm 10 and thus the gripping jaws 17A, 17B can be reciprocated relative to the cylinders 2 and 8 by means of a pair of air chambers A1, A2 disposed between the cylinders 2, 8 on opposite sides of a flange 10A extending from the arm 10, such that on supplying compressed air to either of the two said air chambers the arm 10 is caused to move in its longitudinal direction, a projection 10C of the arm 10 engaging in a longitudinal groove 2A formed in the side of the second cylinder 2. It is possible to rotate the cylinder 2 about its longitudinal axis, and thus cause the simultaneous rotation of the arm 10 and jaws by virtue of the engagement of the projection 10C and groove 2A. A pair of chambers (6A, 6B) is defined by a vane (3) which is secured to the cylinder (2) and which has a vane slider (4 in engagement with the hollow tube (1), Fig. 2 (not shown). On supplying compressed air via conduits (5A, 5B) to either of the chambers (6A, 6B) the cylinder (2) is rotated.
