Abstract
1415935 Easy-open can ends G B KLEIN 14 Feb 1973 [14 Feb 1972] 7148/73 Heading B8D An easy-open can end L is provided with an integral score-line-defined convex button or tab T, which is adapted to be flexed inwardly to a concave position to initiate rupture of the scoreline 33, along at least a portion of its length. The tab has a non-scored end 34 so that it remains attached to the can end after rupture of the scoreline and inward depression. The scoreline is preferably formed in the bottom surface of a double-folded rim or bead 30 so that the sharp edge left on rupture of the scoreline is shielded by the rounded bead fold 31 which defines the pouring aperture rim. An upwardlyprojecting crease 41 is formed at the front of the tab and extends below the fold 31 to form a local stress-concentrating disruption at which rupture is initiated on inward flexing. Corrugations (40), Fig. 4 (not shown) facilitate flexure of the tab. In modifications, Figs. 10-17 and Fig. 18 (not shown), the crease 41 is replaced by two downwardly-projecting creases 43 and 44 to form a local, W-shaped stress-concentrating and rupture-initiating disruption. In the embodiments of Figs. 19-22, Fig. 23, Fig. 24 and Fig. 25, the tab is of generally circular configuration, and the stress-concentrating and rupture-initiating disruptions are provided by radial or chordal creases 41<SP>11</SP>, 55, 58 or 59.
