Abstract
1415813 Controlling burners; boilers GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 7 Jan 1974 [29 Jan 1973] 683/74 Headings F4T and F4A In a steam generator, e.g. a marine boiler, having a plurality of burners receiving air from a common windbox 14, Fig. 2, via individual ducts 12 and ejecting combustion mixture through the ducts into a common firebox 13, each duct contains an adjustable air register 15, a fuel nozzle 17 and a directional electroacoustical probe 8 which monitors the sound from its associated burner. A relatively narrow frequency band of sound is selected wherein there exists a substantial decibel difference between flame and no-flame conditions of each burner and when the monitored sound level within that band falls below a selected threshold the fuel supply to the associated burner is shut off. This is achieved by supplying the probe signal through an amplifier (31), Fig. 3 (not shown), a band filter (32) to a threshold trigger (33) which controls a fuel shut-off valve (34). Liquid fuel and atomizing steam are fed to the nozzle 17. The probe may be water or air cooled. Most of the burner components are mounted in a removable insulated cover 9 in outer furnace wall 10. A rotatable lever 18 allows withdrawal of supply box 19 and nozzle 17 for cleaning. Swirl means 21 are provided.
