Abstract

1414987 Apparatus for fibrillating film JAMES MACKIE & SONS Ltd 7 March 1973 [8 March 1972] 10818/72 Heading B5B A film, tube, or tape of synthetic organic polymer which has been stretched to produce longitudinal molecular orientation therein is fed longitudinally into engagement with cutting elements carried by a fibrillator and driven in the same direction of motion as the film tube or tape but at a greater surface speed, and relative lateral traversing movement is caused between the fibillator and the film tube or tape. The traversing movement is preferably long in relation to the time interval between consecutive slits or rows of slits. The polymer is preferably warm. An apparatus comprises a fibrillator, guides for leading the film etc. into engagement with cutters carried thereon, and means for inducing relative lateral movement. Fig. 1 shows one suitable apparatus, comprising a drum 1, carrying cutters 2, rotated by shaft 3 carried on frame 5, lateral movement being imparted by means of interaction between the finger 7 engaging in path 9 cut in rotating drum 10.
