Abstract
1414734 Submerged arc heating BOHLER & CO AG Gebr 13 April 1973 [14 April 1972] 18026/73 Heading H5H [Also in Divisions B3 and C7] .In a process and apparatus for submerged arc surfacing of metallic workpieces a strap electrode 6 of more than 75 mm. width is used with a D.C. arc and a stationary magnetic field is maintained by magnetic pole means 27, 28 disposed adjacent the edges of the strip, the effect of the magnetic field being to extend the width of the deposited surface layer 19 by 2 to 15 mm. As shown the magnetic poles 27, 28 are interconnected by magnetic core means 26 which embrace the strip 6 and are adjustable to accommodate different widths of strip, a single electrical coil 25 connected to a D.C. source 10 providing the magnetic field. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) separate pole pieces are provided each with its own magnetizing coil and the polepieces have hemispherical ends. The magnetic poles and coils in both cases are mounted to move with the strip electrode in the direction 5. Alternatively the strip electrode and magnets may be stationary and the workpiece move.
