Abstract

1413801 Extracorporeal blood pumps BENTLEY LABORATORIES INC 16 Aug 1972 [16 Aug 1971] 38293/72 Heading A5R [Also in Division F1]. A pump for extracorporeal blood pumping comprises a disposable flexible envelope 20, Fig. 1, e.g. of polyurethane, with inlet and outlet lip valves 42, 41, and a diaphragm 33 which is reciprocated by a pneumatic or hydraulic actuator 16 to compress the envelope 20 to discharge its contents and to release the envelope to permit refilling by venous blood under its own pressure. The initiation of the discharge stroke is controlled either by a sensor 89 detecting filling of the envelope 20, or by a timer. The pump also may be controlled by the R wave of the patient's ECG waveform. The upper limit of the discharge stroke is determined by closure of an aperture 75 by a projection 77, thereby creating back pressure in an air tube 73 to provide a signal in a pneumatic circuit for reversing actuator 16. The diaphragm stroke is adjusted by rotating a sleeve 56 by a gear train, Fig. 3 (not shown), sleeve 56 being threaded on a sleeve 50 fixed to actuating shaft 43, and having a stop 57 engaging an O-ring 59 at the end of the downward stroke. The diaphragm may be manually actuated by mounting a crank assembly in bushes 78, 79 and engaging an eccentric in recess 83. The envelope and valve assembly is held in place by a cover 29 secured by a releasable clamp, Fig 2 (not shown). The envelope 20 comprises a tube 105, Fig. 4, clamped at each end to inlet and outlet valve assemblies 101, 106 each comprising a lip valve 103, 108, e.g. moulded from silicone rubber, the valve being provided with a slit by cutting first in an axial direction and then intersecting the first cut by a transverse cut, thereby forming clean, sharp edges on the valving surfaces 152. The inlet and outlet fittings 100, 110 and the valves are of substantially constant flow cross-sectional area. The valve width is several times greater than its height. The fittings 100, 110, e.g. of polycarbonate, each comprise a cylindrical portion 115 and a tapered portion 118, and are clamped to tube 105 by metal clamps 135, 136 and 172, 173.
