Abstract

1358594 Raising liquids by vacuum BIOSCIENCE LABORATORIES 24 June 1971 29675/71 Heading F1R [Also in Division F2] In pipetting apparatus which comprises a pipette 35 sealed by a gasket 200, and lines 50, 60 through which continuous suction and pressure are respectively established, a valve is provided at the intersection of the lines 50, 60 and pipette 35 so that the latter may be selectively placed in communication with one of the lines 50, 60 or sealed from both. As shown in Fig.2 the suction and pressure are created by respective motor driven pumps 82, 84 through sections controlled by respective regulating screw clamps 91, and flow constrictions 90. The valve 100 comprises pivotal arms 128, 129 each normally spring- biased to compress a common tube wall 126, the arm 128 being raised as shown (by depression of a button (138), Fig. 5, (not shown), on one end of a lever (136)to allow fluid to be drawn by suction into the pipette 35, after which arm 128 is lowered and the arm 129 is similarly raised to allow pressure to discharge the fluid. In a second embodiment, Fig.3, the lines 50, 60 are connected respectively to the suction and pressure sides of a pump 88 and the pressure is regulated by a valve controlled surge chamber 92. The valve 100 in this embodiment comprises a body 160 which is rotatable relative to a base 150 so that a stud (155) thereof is placed either in communication with the line 50 or 60, or sealed from both as shown. Fluid may be drawn into both the pipette 35 and line 50 which is then closed, to divide the fluid into two portions, that in line 50 being drawn into a trap 85 and acting as a pre-wash fluid. The line 50 preferably includes a transparent portion or view port so that an operator knows when charging of a pipette is complete. The pipette 35 is replaceable and may be held in place by a friction member Fig. 4, (not shown) or by being provided with a shoulder engagably by a lever mechanism (300) Fig. 6, (not shown).
