Abstract

1315603 Mixing liquids in flow; segmenting sample stream TECHNICON INSTRUMENTS CORP 17 Aug 1971 [4 Sept 1970] 38518/71 Headings B1C and B1X [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for introducing a first fluid, e.g. air, periodically into a second fluid flowing at a substantially constant rate to divide the second fluid into discrete and substantially equal volumes comprises a pump 12 for supplying the second fluid along pipe 10, a conduit 16 connecting a pump 18, for supplying the first fluid at a substantially constant pressure, and the pipe 10, and first and second valves means 20, 22 operated by control means 24. Each valve means in a first position compresses and closes the conduit 16 at a respective point, and in a second position opens the conduit 16 at that point. A cavity 26 is defined between the points. The valve means operate in the following sequence (a) valve means 20 is moved to its second position for time tl to allow the first fluid to pass into the cavity 26, (b) after time t2 during which both valve means are in their first positions and a volume of first fluid is trapped in the cavity, the valve means 22 is moved to its second position for a time t3 to allow the first fluid volume to pass into the second fluid stream, and (c) after a further time t4 during which the valve means are again both in their first positions the sequence is repeated. As illustrated in Fig. 3 the second fluid R is a re-agent and the first and second valve means are comprised by lever arms 40, 42 pivotally mounted at 44 and urged by spring 46 to pinch the conduit 16 which is comprised by a resilient tube, e.g. of silicone rubber against a plate 48. A pump 60 supplying liquid samples SA separated by air bubbles S effects the sequence of operations of the valve means, so that the reagent volumes and the liquid samples are mixed prior to introduction to an analytical apparatus, via a pivoted arm 54 carrying a cam roller 58 which in use engages the arms 40, 42 alternateiy to move them to a non-pinch position. The arm 54 may be driven in synchronism with the pump 60 by means of a reversible electric motor controlled by a timer and control means (Fig. 6, not shown).
