Abstract
1402284 Sampling liquids COULTER ELECTRONICS Inc 10 Oct 1972 [14 Oct 1971 21 Oct 1971 10 April 1972 31 Aug 1972] 37287/74 Divided out of 1402283 Heading B8N [Also in Division G1] A sampling valve comprises first and second valve blocks 318, 320, block 320 being longitudinally slidable on (shorter) block 318 between a first sample aspirating position (Fig. 6) and a second position (Fig. 7A) in which a given amount of sample is flushed out of the valve by reagent, the sample being drawn through line 322 into sample loop 334 by application of suction by line 393, reagent simultaneously flowing through lines 345, 409 when the valve is in its first position, and the sample being dispensed through line 350 when the valve is in its second position, reagent then flowing from line 409 into the second valve block 318 and through (i) gallery 402, line 398 and the sample loop, and (ii) gallery 402 and "shunt gallery" 403 which is preferably of longer cross-section than the sample loop, the two streams meeting and mixing for flow out of the valve by line 350. The valve blocks are mounted between plates 364, (366) which are pivotable at 357 on a support post 362, the first valve block 318 being secured to the plates and the second valve block 320 being urged towards block 318 by a bar 378 pivotable at one of its ends on post 362 and at the other end or block 320, the sliding movement of block 320 on block 318 which is obtained on pivoting of the plates 364 (366) by actuation of air cylinder piston arrangement 326 being limited by engagement of end stops 358, 386 or block 320 with the ends of block 318. In another embodiment (Figs. 8, 9, not shown), a plurality of sampling valves is mounted along a horizontal cylindrical shaft which is pivotable about its long axis.
