Abstract

1,263,776. Dilution of blood samples; mixing liquids. COULTER ELECTRONICS Ltd. 7 May, 1969 [8 May, 1968], No. 23360/69. Headings B1C and B1X. To obtain in vessel 19 a known dilution of a blood sample from 21, blood in measured capillary portion 20 of tube 2 between conduits 12 and 13 is swept into tube 1 by a known amount of diluent passing along tube 1 some of which passes into portion 20 via capillary conduit 13 to sweep the blood via capillary conduit 12 into the main stream of diluent in tube 1. The diluted sample is collected at 19. To start the operation, pump 4, tube 1 and capillary conduits 12 and 13 are filled with diluent, while tube 2 is filled with blood. Cam 7 is then rotated to move piston 5 upwards, which movement causes the known amount of diluent to flow through tube 1. The apparatus may be automatic. Zone 20 may be an interchangeable element.
