Abstract

1,268,530. Sample feeder. CARL-ZEISSSTIFTUNG [trading as CARL ZEISS]. 15 Dec., 1969 [20 Dec., 1968], No. 60992/69. Heading B1X. [Also in Division G2] In the spectrochemical analysis of a solution, a vaporiser-burner combination 1 is fed with a modulated sample of the solution 6. The solution passes from a vessel 5 through a capillary tube 4, a flexible capillary hose 3 and capillary tube 2 to the vaporiser 1. A member 7 slidably supported at 9 is connected to a rod 10 pivotally secured to a drive disc 11 which rotates to produce a reciprocating motion in the direction of arrow 12. This causes the formation within tube 4 of individual liquid columns separated by columns of air. Vessel 5 can be adjusted to allow for the drop in liquid level. The end of tube 4 can be made to remain in the solution 6 during a reciprocating cycle or be lifted above the liquid level. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), three solutions in a divided vessel (14) are successively fed to the vaporiser 1 through the tube 4 which is simultaneously rotated and lifted by a rod (18) and disc (19) driven by a motor (22). In a third embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), two solutions (43), (44) are alternately fed through respective flexible tubes (37), (38) to the vaporiser 1. In a fourth embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the solution is fed under pressure by a piston (26) through a tube (23) which is reciprocated.
