Abstract

978,794. Sequentially supplying liquid samples. TECHNICON INSTRUMENTS CORPORATION. Oct. 9, 1962 [Oct. 20, 1961], No. 38123/62. Heading B1X. A liquid sample supply device for analytical apparatus comprises a carrier 16 for a row of containers 18 for the liquid samples, a take-off device 24 having a tubular part movable into and out of said containers for withdrawing liquid therefrom and a receptacle 38 for washliquor positioned laterally of the row of carriers, the carrier 16 being adapted to move in the direction of the row of containers and the tubular part of the take-off device being movable also into and out of the wash liquid receptacle. The above numerals refer to Fig. 3, in which the desired movement of the take-off device 24 into and out of the container 18 and receptacle 38 is effected by clamping the device to a vertical rod 56 which is movable up and down by a cam-operated lever 62 engaging a grooved wheel 60 attached to rod 56. After withdrawal of a liquid sample or of wash liquid, the take-off device is moved into the next withdrawal position by rotation of rod 56 effected by the action of a cam-operated lever 84 on a pin 92 carried by an arm 90 fixed to the rod 56. The cam-operated levers 62 and 84 are motivated by a common cam wheel 78 linked to a Geneva gear for effecting step-wise rotation of carrier 16 of the type described in Specification 834,635. The tube 30 of the take-off device is connected via conduit 128 to a proportioning pump 32 described in Specification 817,070 (see Fig. 1). A stream of liquid samples separated from each other by intervening segments of wash liquid each disposed between a pair of air segments is drawn into tube 30 of the takeoff device. The segmented stream is then fed via the pump to an analysis apparatus, comprising a pump, dialyser, and colorimeter, as described in Specification 774,711. The wash receptacle 38 is preferably of the constant head type being provided with a narrow inlet 44 and an overflow chamber 60,having a wide liquid outlet 48.
