Abstract

992,648. Chemical reactors; chemical analysis systems. TECHNICON INSTRUMENTS CORPORATION. May 21, 1962 [May 25, 1961 ; July 12, 1961], No. 19420/62. Heading B1X. In apparatus for heating successive, separate, portions of liquid which are moving along the lower part of a helical groove 222 in the internal surface of a rotating cylindrical reactor 10, as disclosed in Specification 916,677, a tube 214 is provided for introducing diluent liquid into each portion of treated liquid before it is withdrawn from the reactor. In carrying out a Kjeldahl nitrogen determination, each sample of liquid is mixed with sulphuric acid, and fed into the inlet end (not shown) of the heated reactor; and each digested sample is diluted with water introduced through pipe 214. The diluted samples flow successively into cylindrical groove 220, and are then drawn rapidly via tube 228 into receiver 224 while fresh samples of acidified liquid are being introduced into the opposite end of the reactor. The receiver 224 is maintained under reduced pressure by a source of vacuum connected to tube 230 which dips below the liquid in the receiver. The diluted liquid is drawn into tube 228 so rapidly that the inlet end 226 of the tube is uncovered by liquid, and air is drawn into the receiver 224, which agitates each successive portion of diluted liquid. The diluted liquid is aspirated from the receiver via tube 230, which leads to the analysis equipment, before the succeeding diluted sample flows into the receiver through tube 228. If the flow rate through tube 230 is less than that through tube 228, excess liquid is discharged from the receiver through tube 234. Specifications 817,070 and 834,635 also are referred to.
