Abstract
1429325 Sampling liquids ABBOTT LABORATORIES 21 Nov 1973 [22 Dec 1972] 54129/73 Heading B8N [Also in Divisions G1 and F1] Apparatus for the precision metering of fluids comprises a first capillary conduit 7, 9 having in it a minute aperture 8, a second capillary conduit 11 having one end intersecting the first conduit at the aperture, the aperture then dividing the first conduit into a section 9 and a section 7 which is common to both conduits and providing first and second fluid paths 9, 7 and 11, 7, the aperture 8 allowing formation of a first interface between the first fluid path and conduit 11 (Fig. 3c, not shown) and a second interface between the second path and section 9 of the first conduit (Fig. 3a, not shown), liquid then traversing each of the fluid paths substantially free from contamination from the other fluid path, the apparatus also including a first syringe 15 connected to the end of the conduit section 9 and a second syringe connected to the end of the second conduit 11, each syringe having a movable piston. In the apparatus shown, the first fluid (A), which may be saline, is stored in syringes 15, 23 and the second fluid (B), which may be a silicone oil, is stored in syringes 19, 47. Initially the section 9 is filled with A and section 7, 11 with B. Sample is aspirated into sections 7, 11 by a retraction of piston 49 of syringe 19. Sample is flushed out of section 7 by forcing fluid A from syringe 15 by means of piston 25 through line 13 and sections 9, 7. Sample is dispensed together with some fluid A by operation of piston 49 by a precise amount corresponding to the amount of sample to be dispensed. The remainder of the sample in section 7 is rinsed away by operation of piston 25 to force fluid A into sections 9, 7.
