Abstract
1412601 Heat treating seals USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 4 Dec 1972 [22 Dec 1971] 55811/72 Heading C7N [Also in Division B3] A method of making high carbon flat bar stock for steel files comprises hot rolling high-carbon steel into a slab, hot rolling the slab at a temperature within the range 1600-2200‹F, coiling the strip at a temperature above 1000‹F, furnaceannealing the coil at a temperature above the A 1 critical temperature for at least two hours in a reducing atmosphere, cooling the coil at a rate of about 20 to 40‹F per hour to a temperature of about 1250‹F to form spheroidized carbide precipitates, furnace-cooling the coil to a temperature below 400‹F, and slitting the uncoiled strip into bars having the width of the bar stock. The bars are then cut into file blanks. The annealing is preferably a box annealing within the range 1350‹ to 1380‹F with the dew point of the reducing atmosphere being adjusted, after the temperature has reached 1100‹ F, to 15. F. Prior to the slitting operation the strip may be given a light roll to eliminate coil set. The files may be produced by surface grinding the stock to remove the thin outer layer of pure iron and decarbonized steel and then cutting grooves or teeth. The files can then be rehardened by immersion in a molten lead bath at 1450‹F for 3 to 4 minutes followed by quenching in a saturated brine solution.
