Abstract

1412443 Making dies UNION CARBIDE CORP 13 Oct 1972 [15 Oct 1971] 7127/75 Divided out of 1412442 Heading B5A A method of making a die to be used for deforming a thin sheet of material (metal or non-metal) by pressing, stamping or rolling comprises securing under tension a flexible membrane 29 over a recess provided in a block 21 with the membrane in contact with a plurality of supports 26 (e.g. pins, see Fig. 2A) spaced apart in a predetermined pattern and extending upwardly from the bottom 33 of the recess, applying a fluid pressure differential across the membrane to urge the unsupported portions thereof between the supports towards but not into contact with the base 33 of the recess, depositing a form setting material 34 on to that surface of the membrane 29 remote from the supports 26, curing the said material, removing the applied pressure differential, and then removing the cured setting material, said cured material 34 constituting the die. As shown in Fig. 2, the membrane 29 (e.g. a rubber sheet) is clamped at its periphery by clamping means 30, 31. Suction is then applied by a vacuum pump 24 via ducts 22 in the block 21 to the underside of the membrane which is thereby sucked downwardly between the projections 26 and assumes the shape such as shown in Fig. 2B and determined by the spacing of the supports 26. Thereafter the die-forming material 34 (e.g. expoxy resins, thermoplastics, cement or concrete) is deposited on the membrane and cured. After curing, the block of material 34 is removed from the block 21 and may be used as a master cast for the fabrication of a mould, or it may be used as a die with or without a suitable coating for providing a profile such as bubble-shaped protrusions (e.g. Figs. 6, 7) on sheet of material used in the fabrication of heat exchangers. Such sheet material may comprise metal, e.g. aluminium, copper, steel, or brass, clad metals, plastics or plasticscoated metals.
