Abstract

1316191 Making press tools; stamping VAUXHALL MOTORS Ltd 6 Jan 1972 [7 Jan 1971] 786/71 Headings B3A and B3Q A method of making a pressure pad assembly for a press tool 2 comprises the steps of making a metal pressure pad 12 having runner and riser channels 22, 24, depositing a coating of readily removable material 20 on a die member 6 of the press tool, the coating having a thickness substantially the same as that of a metal workpiece to be pressed, locating the pressure pad adjacent the coated die member with a gap 26 therebetween, sealing the periphery of the gap, filling the gap with a resilient material 32, allowing the material to harden and adhere to the pressure pad, and removing the coating from the die member. The resilient material is an epoxy resin which hardens on exposure to the atmosphere and the coating 20 is a wax to which the epoxy resin does not adhere. A layer of adhesive 28 is applied to the pressure pad, prior to the pouring of epoxy resin through runner 22, to enable the epoxy resin to adhere to the pressure pad. The pressure pad, which is cast, is mounted in a frame portion 8, Fig. 1 (not shown), with an upper die (10) mounted above. The gap 26 between the pad and die member 6 is sealed by blocks 30 which are removed upon curing the resin. The wax coating is then removed, e.g. by melting.
