Abstract

1412444 Casting; sheet forming UNION CARBIDE CORP 13 Oct 1972 [15 Oct 1971] 7128/75 Divided out of 1412442 Heading B5A [Also in Division B3] In the production by any conventional means such as pressing, stamping or rolling of a heat exchange wall having bubble-shaped protrusions thereon, e.g. shown in Figs. 1 and 3A (and Figs. 6 and 7) and formed of a thin sheet material, e.g. metal such as aluminium, copper, steel, titanium, metal alloy such as brass, clad metals, platics, or plastics-coated metals, a die (formed by material 34, Fig. 2B) is utilized having recesses 37 therein shaped to provide the protrusions in the heat exchange wall. Each recess and associated base portion in the die (see Figs. 1 and 3A) has the following proportions; a D/d ratio in the range substantially 3 to 10, an H/D ratio in the range substantially 0À05 to 0À2, and a D dimension in the range substantially 0À2 to 2À5 inches, where H is the depth of the recess, D is the distance between the centres of adjacent recesses, and d is a dimension of the base of each recess and is defined by the ratio Aa/p wherein a is the planar area defined by the perimeter of the respective base and p is the perimeter length of the respective base. The die is made by securing a rubber membrane 29, Fig. 2, over projections 26 formed on a block 21, the membrane being clamped at its periphery by clamping means 30, 31. Suction is then applied by a vacuum pump 24 via ducts 22 in the block 21 to the underside of membrane 29 so that the membrane is sucked downwardly between the projections 26 and assumes the shape shown in Fig. 2B. Thereafter the die forming material 34 (e.g. expoxy resins, thermoplastics, cement or concrete) is deposited on the membrane and allowed to cure. After curing the block of material 34 is removed from the block 21 and may be used as a master cast for the fabrication of a mould or it may be used as a die with or without a suitable die-casting coating.
