Abstract

1412298 Keyboards POST OFFICE 29 Nov 1973 [5 Sept 1972] 41050/72 Heading G4H [Also in Division H1] An electrical signal initiating keyboard includes a number of motion transmitting elements, a layer of resiliently deformable insulating foam material having at one face thereof a plurality of electrically-conductive tracks defined by conductive particles, and a plurality of terminals connected to associated ones of the tracks, the arrangement being that each motion transmitting element is operable to deform a respective area of the foam material to thereby change the resistance between terminals associated with that particular area. Fig. 3 shows a typical key 3, depression of which compresses a respective area of a sheet 1 of insulating foam so that a respective two out of fifteen tracks 2 of conductive particles make contact, through a respective hole 13 in a spacer 12, with a conducting layer 14. Seven signals are applied to the fifteen tracks through connections whereby three of the signals go to a respective track each and the other four signals go to a respective three of the tracks each. Consequently, the layer 14 receives two out of seven of the signals depending on the key pressed. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which the keys are integral with the top plate which is flexible, and the foam sheet 1 and the conducting layer 14 are interchanged, layer 14 being of flexible polymeric material. The spacer may be omitted.
