Abstract

1411256 Glove boxes SINLOIHI CO Ltd 27 Nov 1972 [2 Oct 1972] 10066/75 Divided out of 1411255 Heading B4Q [Also in Division B1] A handling system for a gaseous radioisotope comprises a handling chamber which is arranged to contain a gaseous radioisotope manipulating apparatus and to be sealed under a negative pressure, a ventilation box which is sealed to the handling chamber, a door for selectively closing an opening between the handling chamber and the upper part of the ventilation box equipment for ventilating the ventilation box and, within the ventilation box, treatment apparatus incorporating means for recirculating the atmosphere in the handling chamber through the treatment apparatus and means for recovering gaseous radioisotope from the atmosphere during the recirculation. As shown, a glove box 51 adapted to be operated at slightly below atmospheric pressure is connected by closable aperture 64 to a chamber 56 containing apparatus 57 for treatment of radioactive gases, the apparatus being separately connected to the glove box by valves 58. The apparatus 57 may include means for oxidation, combustion or adsorption to give a liquid or solid product. In use, radioactivity remaining in the glove box after use is reduced by circulating the atmosphere through the apparatus 57; when it has reached a safe level aperture 64 is opened and the air in both chambers is exhausted to atmosphere by pump 66.
