Abstract

1410173 Ignition systems MOBELEC INTERNATIONAL Ltd 13 Dec 1972 [15 Dec 1971 8 June 1972] 58258/71 and 26783/72 Heading F1B [Also in Division H3] An ignition circuit for an internal combustion engine or a timer for an engine having a fuel injection system comprises a laminated U-shaped magnetic core 10, Fig. 1, which is magnetized by direct current through a coil 11 and is mounted in proximity to a timing cam, Fig. 3 (not shown), of magnetizable material, each cam peak when in close proximity of the core causing magnetic saturation and a change of voltage across the coil. The core and coil assembly may replace the contact set in the distributer of an internal combustion engine. Coil voltage changes due to core saturation are converted into pulses for an ignition coil by the circuit shown in Fig. 4, the direct current through the coil 11 being applied from a D.C. supply Vi through a filter Rl, Cl and regulated by the combination of a transistor TR1 and a Zener diode Z 1. Such voltage changes are applied from terminal A to a stabilized transistor TR2 through a filter R5, R6, C3, C4, C5 and a capacitor C6, and then through monostable transistor stages TR3, TR4 and an output transistor TR5 to an output terminal B. A modified core structure, Fig. 5 (not shown), has a coil on each core limb, the two coils being either connected in series so as to minimize the effect of stray external magnetic field, or be so connected to the associated circuit that one coil is excited by direct current and the other acts as a transformer winding for induced pulses. The arrangement may be applied to a capacitor discharge ignition system.
