Abstract

Nov. 29, 1918 Generating by indirect contact of hot waste gases.-A multitubular horizontal or waste-heat boiler for use with industrial furnaces is provided with mechanical means for inducing a draught such that the gases travel through the tubes at a mean velocity of not less than 40 ft. per sec., efficiency being attained by making the length of the tubes not less than 50 times their internal diameter, or by inserting a superheater at the entrance to the tubes, or by both expedients. Waste gases are drawn through a boiler h by a fan c, and are delivered into the chimney i through a flue k. A damper-controlled by-pass l allows the gases to pass into the chimney when the fan is out of use. When the boiler is not working, a damper m in the waste-gas flues is closed and a damper n opened, thus allowing the gases to pass directly into the chimney. A superheater g may be placed in the chamber a at the entrance to the tubes. The gases may pass through return tubes or through tubes in a second boiler shell. A superheater may be fitted in the space between the two sets of tubes. The part of the front plate not cooled by water may be protected from burning by an auxiliary plate.
