Abstract
1407886 Aerials DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 10 May 1974 [11 May 1973] 22682/73 Heading H4A An aerial comprising a flexible rod 1 supported substantially vertically by an insulator 2 (i.e. a whip aerial) is provided with a flange 4 which is adjacent the insulator and which is in a plane substantially perpendicular to the rod. It is also provided with a conically shaped insulating shield 6 around the insulator, which extends upwardly towards the flange. As described, the aerial and the shield 6 are mounted on a base tuner 3. The flange 4, which is attached to the aerial rod 1 by means of a clamp 5, may be made of a material of low surface energy, for example, ethylene propylene polymer, or, alternatively, comprise a thin resilient sheet of a metal such as phosphor bronze or copper beryllium alloy which is covered with a material of low surface energy. The purpose of the invention is to protect the surface of the insulator 2 from ice formation thereupon as a result of sea spray when the aerial is installed on a ship such as a deep sea trawler. A heater may optionally be provided within the space 7 surrounding the insulator 2 within the shield 6.
