1407675 Refractory shapes STEETLEY (MFG) Ltd 10 Nov 1972 [13 Aug 1971] 38161/71 Heading C1J Refractory shapes are made by forming a mixture of graded particulate refractory substance, bituminous substance and from 0À1 to 0À6 wt. per cent sulphur (based on wt. of refractory substance), pressing the mixture to form a shape, raising the temperature of the shape at 40‹ to 100‹ C./hour until a temperature in the range from 180‹ to 310‹ C. has been attained, at which temperature the shape is maintained for from 2¢ to 10 hours, The refractory substance may be dead-burned dolomite, dead-burned magnesia, dead-burned lime or physical mixtures or coclinkers of these together optionally with zirconia, zircon chromia or titania. The bituminous substance may be tar, pitch, bitumen, petroleum distillate residues or asphalt. The refractory substance and carbonaceous substance may be heated before mixing to 50‹ to 300‹ C. Carbon may be incorporated in the carbonaceous substance. The examples describe the preparation of refractory block from dead-burnt dolomite and tar or pitch together with sulphur.
