Abstract
Refractory ramming and brickmaking mixes comprise a refractory and a bonding material, the latter including an unsaturated fluid fatty acid pitch, e.g. one obtained from the distillation of linseed or soyabean extracts. The bonding material may also contain medium and/or hard pitch, bunker "C" oil, gilsonite, linseed oil, shale tar, asphalt, creosote, various oil pitches, tars, or waxes. The refractory is preferably dead-burned magnesite or dead-burned dolomite or a mixture thereof, optionally together with hard-burned lime, but many other refractories and refractory aggregates are mentioned including forsterite, olivine, chrome ore, calcined fire clay, ganister, diaspore, bauxite, kyarite, alumina, mullite, and mixtures containing silicon carbide, zircon or zirconia. Other possible ingredients of the mixes are graphite, lamp black, and various polymers which form a thermosetting bond, e.g. acrylic acid polymers, polyacrylates, polyamide, polyesters, and epoxy resins.
