Abstract

1407600 Fluid-pressure servomotor systems FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 21 Nov 1972 [27 Dec 1971] 53691/72 Heading G3P [Also in in Divisions F1 and F2] The choke valve 28 of a carburetter is biased against the air-flow tending to open it by a thermostatic spring 60 and the spring force is opposed by a servo 90 responsive to the vacuum downstream of the throttle valve 36. The servo chamber 144 is subject to the vacuum through a sintered metal plug 106 and a central opening in an elastomeric valve disc 108. The rate of increase of vacuum in the chamber 144 is restricted by the plug 106 and the plug is by-passed through a slot 105 when the pressure in the passage 100 rises above that in the chamber and the disc 108 moves away from the plug. A bi-metallic washer 126 carries an elastomeric valve 130 which flips from a position closing the passage 124 to a position opening the passage above a predetermined temperature, e.g. 65‹F, to permit the vacuum to act on the servo diaphragm 140. The spring 60 is subject to the temperature of air passing through passages 68 and 70 into its housing 42, 66, e.g. from an exhaust manifold heater, and acts through an angularly adjustable shaft 48 on the valve 28. A piston 78 subject to the vacuum downstream of the valve 36 acts on the shaft 44 in opposition to the spring 60 and provides partial opening of the valve 28 immediately on engine starting, a lost-motion connection 152, 154 between the valve and the servo 90 permitting this opening.
