Abstract

1403363 Fuel injection system C A V Ltd 23 Oct 1972 [30 Oct 1971] 50526/71 Heading F1B A fuel injection system for supplying fuel to an I.C. engine comprises an accumulator 10, a fuel injection nozzle including a valve 13 connected thereto by a conduit 12 with a valve 19, means being provided to open valves 12, 19, a cylinder 20 containing a shuttle 21 loaded by resilient means 22 being in parallel with valve 19. The unit 27 operates the valves 13, 19 in timed relationship with each other and with the engine so that with valve 13 closed at the end of fuel injection, valve 19 opens and shuttle 21 is moved leftwards by resilient means 22, after which valve 19 is closed and valve 13 opened when injection is required, the shuttle 21, when valve 13 is opened, moving against the action of the resilient loading. Ports 23, 24 in shuttle and cylinder communicate at a predetermined position of the shuttle as it moves to the right, to terminate injection by releasing fuel into the cylinder containing piston 25. Such fuel is displaced to drain by piston 25 when shuttle 21 has moved back. Valves 13 and 19 are operated by solenoids 16 and. have pistons 17 slidable in cylinders connected to accumulator 10.
