Abstract

1402135 Boots &c W BOTTERILL & SONS Ltd 12 Oct 1973 [20 July 1972] 33877/72 Heading A3B A screw-in stud for a sports shoe consists of a body 1 of a relatively soft and flexible material, e.g. soft rubber or plastics material, which forms the ground contacting part of the stud, and a screw-threaded shank 2a which projects from the body 1 and is intended to be screwed into a complementary socket (not shown) in the sole of a shoe to which the stud is fitted, the shank 2a having a head 2b which is embedded in or bonded to the body 1 and has parts which extend laterally of the shank 2a to the exterior surface of the body 1, said parts being shaped so that the head 2b can be engaged by a tool, e.g. a spanner, for the purpose of rotating the stud when fitting it to a shoe. In a first embodiment as shown the head 2b integral with the shank 2a is rectangular in shape and is embedded in the body 1 to leave a pair of flats which can be engaged by a spanner. The material of the body 1 also forms a skirt or collar 1a below the head 2b, the skirt or collar 1a forming the base of the stud which lies adjacent the sole. In a modification (not shown) the headed shank consists of a conventional screw, the head of which is fitted with an adaptor component shaped to produce the required overall head configuration. The adaptor component may be a box-form metal washer fitted to the head of the screw or a plastics moulding fitted to or moulded onto the head of the screw.
