Abstract
1401314 Photo-flash lamps GTE SYLVANIA Inc 31 Aug 1972 [9 Sept 1971] 40463/72 Heading G2L A photo-flash lamp comprises an hermetically sealed light-transmitting envelope with an internal diameter less than 0.5 inch and an internal volume less than 1 cc containing a combustionsupporting gas and a quantity of filamentary combustible material consisting of a number of strands having lengths slightly longer than or less than the internal diameter of the lamp, the density of the strands within the envelope being such that the strands are self-supporting. The photo-flash lamp is electrically or percusively ignited and the strands, e.g. of zirconium foil of cross-sectional area 1.1 to 1.2 sq mils are preferably less than ¢ inch long. It has been determined that the strand length in inches is given by:- where D is the inside diameter of the envelope, L is the average effective internal length of the envelope, W is the weight of filamentary material within the envelope and K is a constant whose value depends on the composition and crosssections of the filamentary material strands. Preferably the weight of filamentary material within the envelope is at least 20 milligrams, and the density thereof is greater than 25 mgm/c.c. Preferably the filamentary material occupies the two-thirds of the envelope which is opposite the end at which the ignition arrangement is disposed and the distribution of the filamentary material is such that it is denser adjacent the centre of the envelope than adjacent the walls thereof. A number of particular examples are given.
