Abstract

1400645 Hatch covers ASCARGO SA 1 May 1973 20587/73 Heading B7S In a fastening-down arrangement for ship's hatch covers, the cover sections 1, 2, 3, 4 are provided with wheels 10, 11 which run on rails 15 provided on the athwartships sides of the hatch coaming 5. Rails 15 have gaps-in their length for receiving the wheels 10, 11. Rail members 16 are situated at the gaps and are arranged to be moved to a position level with the rails 15 (giving the rail 15, 16 an effectively unbroken upper surface) or to a lower position. The rail members 16 are operatively connected to hatch securing members on all four sides of the hatch. As shown, each rail member 16 is connected to one arm of a bell crank 17 (see Fig. 3) whose other arm is connected to a horizontal control bar 18 which is slidable by a double acting hydraulic ram 19. The control bars 18 at the sides of the hatch operate further control bars 18 at the fore and at the aft end of the hatch. As shown, different securing means are provided around the cover sections as follows:- A. At the athwartships sides of the hatch, the securing apparatus includes a lug (27) on each rail member 16 which carries a vertically adjustable screw, the lower end of which may bear downwardly against a flange (29) on the cover section 1, 2, 3 or 4, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown). B. At the end nearest the stowing position (left in Fig. 1) the control bar 18 operates bell cranks 17<SP>1</SP> whose free ends may engage and urge downwardly C-shaped hooks 22 welded to the cover section 4. C. At the end remote from the stowing position, the control bar 18 operates further belt cranks each of which is connected to a bracket which may engage and urge downwardly a lug projecting from the cover section. D. Between the cover sections, are provided plungers 37 (Fig. 12) each of which is biased downwardly in a sleeve 40 by a spring 41 and is forced upwardly by engagement with a lug 48 on rail 15 when the cover section is lowered into its closed position. The T-shaped lever 39 to which plunger 37 is connected therefore rotates about pivot 42 and displaces a horizontal rod 43. Rod 43 thus turns bell crank 44 to force screw 46 into engagement with a projection 47 on the adjacent cover section. A sealing strip 30 is provided around each cover section.
