Abstract

922,804. Hatch covers. VON TELL TRADING CO. A.B. Oct. 2, 1961 [Oct. 4, 1960], No. 35460/61. Class 65 (1). A hatch cover comprising at least three hingedly connected sections has means, e.g. an hydraulic jack 14, 15, for folding the first and second sections 2, 3 into a position in which their undersides are turned towards each other and a piston movable hydraulically in a cylinder 20 which is pivoted on the match coaming at 19 (Fig. 1) or on the third section 4 for folding the third section into a position in which its upper side is turned to face the second section, the piston rod 21 connected to the piston being adapted, at the end of the folding movement of the first and second sections, to engage a fitting 23 attached to the third section or to the hatch coaming in such a way that forcing the piston rod out of the cylinder moves the third section to its folded position. The fitting has a downwardly opening notch 24 and a depending branch 25 which forces a cross-piece 22 at the end of the piston rod into the notch as the section slides along the coaming. The notch is closed by a hooked portion 28 of a catch 27 pivoted on the fitting at 26, the catch being held inoperative, in the position shown, to enable the cross-piece 22 to enter or leave the notch by the engagement of a roller 29 with an abutment 31 on the coaming. A catch 17 is provided to hold the first and second sections in their folded position. Fig. 4 shows the arrangement when the cylinder 20<SP>1</SP> is pivoted on the third section, the fitting 23<SP>1</SP> on the coaming having a notch 24<SP>1</SP> with a narrow opening and an enlarged inner portion 38. The cross piece 22<SP>1</SP> has a bevelled surface 36 which is situated so that the cross piece can only pass through the narrow opening in the notch when the third section is lowered on to the coaming.
