Abstract

1,062,514. Hatch covers. VON TELL TRADING CO. A.B. April 6, 1965, No. 14478/65. Heading B7S. [Also in Division E2] A hatch cover having four hinged sections 2 ... 5 is moved by mechanism comprising an hydraulic double-acting piston-and-cylinder unit 16, 17 pivotally attached at one end to the section 2 by a bolt 18 and at the other end 15 to an arm or lever 14, which is rotatably mounted on a pivot-shaft 9 carrying the section 2, the arm being provided with a rod 21 engaging with a pivoted latch 25 at the foot of the hatch coaming 1 when the cover is in a closed position, Fig. 1 (not shown). The cover is retained in its open position by a manuallyoperated latch 32 mounted on a buffer 44. When the cover is withdrawn from the coaming the unit 16, 17 lifts the sections 2, 3 into a vertical position, Fig. 2 (not shown), whilst the arm 14 is held against an abutment 19 in a downwardly inclined attitude by the latch 25 until the section 2 is engaged by the latch 32, the latch 25 being subsequently opened manually to allow the arm 14 to be moved upwardly by the unit 16, 17. During its upward displacement the arm 14 engages with a roller 30 attached to the section 4, thereby moving the sections 4, 5 into an upright position adjacent the sections 2, 3. A further latch 41 locks the sections 4, 5 when they are in a vertical position. When the arm 14 is moved downwardly it abuts a roller 28 fixed to the section 5 to move the sections 4, 5 down an inclined plane 13 on the coaming. The sections 4, 5 are provided with rollers 11, 12, which engage with the coaming when the cover is moved into its closed position. Identical mechanism is provided on both sides of the cover. The cover may comprise only three sections and the latch 25 may be replaced by an hydraulic locking device. The latch 41 may be omitted, conduits associated with the unit 16, 17 being closed by e.g. a non-return valve, when a control valve for said unit is in a neutral position so that the unit becomes locked.
