Abstract
1400532 Particle spectrometers E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 1 Sept 1972 40658/72 Heading H1D In a scanning mass spectrometer using a magnetic analyser the analyser pole-pieces are so shaped that they magnetize substantially uniformly and the flux distribution remains constant at all field strengths. It is stated that ideally the pole faces should have an exponential configuration in both the longitudinal and transverse directions. An approximation to this curvature can be used as shown in transverse section in Fig. 4, where the sides of the polepieces are flat and inclined at 11¢ degrees to the perpendicular to the pole faces to which they are connected by a circular curved portion of radius 1À25 times the gap spacing a. The longitudinal section, Fig. 5 (not shown) is generally similar. Shunts of magnetic material can be arranged adjacent the sides and ends of the gap to reduce fringing fields.
