Abstract

1399256 Photo-electric edge detector E SICK 13 Oct 1972 [22 Oct 1971] 47365/72 Heading GIA The exact detection of the passage of an edge, between two contrasting areas 11, 12, as it passes across the field of view of photo-electric apparatus. is provided by summing the outputs of two detectors viewing zones 15', 16', respectively wholly within the contrasting areas, and subtracting therefrom twice the value of the output from a detector viewing central zone 14', the resultant signal being compared in a threshold device with a reference level 4 to provide a switching signal. In the arrangement of Fig. 2 besides the abovementioned calculation carried out on the detector outputs by computing amplifier 17, the difference between the outputs of detectors 15, 14 is determined by amplifier 19, to obtain information as to whether the transition is from light to dark or dark to light. The threshold levels (k 2 , k 3 ), which must be above k 1 , may be set individually. One type of transition may be detected at any one time by suitable positioning of switch 28 coupling to AND gate 22. If the type of transition is irrelevant, instead of switch 28 an OR gate is used. In Fig. 7, AND gates 23, 24 and flip-flop 25 are used to give indications at 26, 27 of when transitions in the respective directions occur. The threshold value k 1 of comparator 18 may be varied in accordance with variations in lamp intensity as sensed by a further photo-cell. Alternatively, the amplifier 17 may be adjusted.
