Abstract

PURPOSE: To muffle exhaust noises effectively at the time of a low-speed operation by providing a ristricting plate in the interior of a casing for an outboard engine so as to enhance the rigidity of the casing, thereby changing the vibration mode thereof, and to partition an expansion chamber for exhaust gas into a plurality of chambers.
CONSTITUTION: An exhaust pipe 9 provided in the interior of an upper casing 7 is provided with a partition plate 10 as one body. The plate 10 is jointed to a partition wall 13 and a casing 14 for a driving shaft 8 in a watertight condition to divide the interior of the casing 7 into an upper and a lower part. The ristricting plate 11 is provided between the partition plate 10 and the casing 7 to form a main expansion chamber 1 and the first auxiliary expansion chamber 2. The chambers 1, 2 are communicated with each other by a passage 4 formed in the restricting plate 11, and the chamber 2 is further communicated into the second auxiliary expansion chamber 3 formed of the partition wall 13 and the casing 7 through a passage 4 which is formed inside the casing 7. The chamber 3 is communicated to the exterior of the casing 7 through a tail pipe 6. The exhaust gas from an exhaust pipe 9 is discharged after it is muffled while passing through the main expansion chamber 1, the passage 2, the first auxiliary expansion chamber 2, the passage 5, the second auxiliary expansion chamber 3 and the tail pipe 6.
