Abstract

1398588 Sintering cobalt-rare earth materials TH GOLDSCHMIDT AG 11 Dec 1972 [14 Dec 1971] 57156/72 Headings C7A and C7D A permanent magnet material comprises a sintered mixture of a cobalt-rare earth alloy bonded by at least 10 per cent by weight of a metallic solder which has a melting point below 400‹C. Exemplified alloys include SmCo 5 , PrCo 5 , MMCo 5 (MM=cerium mischmetal) MMCo 3 Cu 2 and Sm Co 3.5 CuFe 0.5 ; manganese and nickel can also be used as partial replacement for cobalt Exemplified binders include Sn-Pb solder; Sn or Pb alone or modified by Sb, Ag or In; In-rich solder; and Woods metal (a solder alloy of Sn/Pb/Bi/Cd). The magnetic powders may be coated with Zn or Sn prior to mixing with the binder. The step of heating the powder mixture to above the melting- point of the binder may be preceded by applying a magnetic field to orientate the magnetic particles and/or by compacting the mixture. The mixture may also be heated and compacted simultaneously. Liquid solid or gaseous fluxes may be incorporated prior to the sintering.
