Abstract

1398062 Making hollow structural members USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 17 Sept 1973 [25 Sept 1972] 43560/73 Heading B3A [Also in Division C7] A hollow steel structural member of polygonal cross-section, e.g. square or rectangular, is made by hot-rolling a hollow tube of round cross-section, austenitizing the tube at a temperature above A 3 , water quenching, reheating to a tempering temperature above the stressrelieving temperature and below A 1 , tempering the tube at this temperature, rolling it to polygonal cross-section while within the tempering temperature range, and air cooling the tube. Table 1 (not shown) gives two examples of suitable steels, a further example having 0À2% C, 1À45% Mn and 0À06% V. Austenitizing is at a temperature above 1550‹ F., e.g. 1600-1750‹ F, preferably in an air atmosphere in a gasfired furnace. The tube may be water-quenched in spray rings to below 200‹ F., e.g. 150‹ F. Tempering is at a temperature between 1150‹ F. and 1225‹ F.
