Abstract
1394872 Shell mould linings REM METALS CORP 2 June 1972 [3 June 1971] 25765/72 Heading B3F [Also in Divisions B5 and C3] An investment shell mould for casting titanium, zirconium and other reactive or refractory metals comprises superimposed layers of shell mould material and binder and a metallic barrier coating on the mould cavity face produced by the hydrogen reduction of at least one of the hydrogen-reducible compounds of tungsten and/or molybdenum. It is formed by successively dipcoating, stuccoing and drying a disposable pattern, the first dip coat including at least one tungsten or molybdenum compound reducible by hydrogen to the metal, the mould shell formed being heat-cured in hydrogen after removal from the pattern. The hydrogen-reducible compound may be a tungsten or molybdenum oxide, tungstic or molybdic acid or salts thereof, ammonium or lanthanum meta-tungstate, an alkoxide, halogenated alkoxide, halide or oxyhalide of molybdenum or tungsten. The first dip coat may include tungsten or molybdenum metal powder.
