Abstract

1394090 Shaped carbon articles KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO KK and TOYO BOSEKI KK 6 July 1972 [6 July 1971] 31677/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division C3] A shaped article of carbon is produced from a shaped article, which expression includes fibres, made from a vinylic high polymer containing chlorine and having an atomic ratio R of chlorine to carbon in the range 2/7<R<1 by first treating the polymer in an infusibilizing step at a temperature below 400‹ C. with at least one substance selected from ammonia amines and mixtures of these, and then the thus treated article is subjected to carbonization in an atmosphere of a non-oxidizing gas. After being so carbonized, the shaped article may be graphitized if so desired. The article may be stretched or prevented from shrinking during the infusibilizing process. The final carbonized or graphitized product may be coated with carbon, boron, or silicon carbide if so desired. The fibres may be bound with resin or laid using paper-making techniques to produce reinforced products.
