Abstract
1393163 Electro-phoretic coating ARMCO STEEL CORP 14 June 1972 [22 July 1971] 27820/72 Heading C7B A plurality of small articles, such as screws, nuts and bolts, is continuously and simultaneously electro-phoretically coated, e.g. with resin and pigment, by delivering the articles e.g. via chute 90 on to a conveyor at least partially submerged in a bath 20 of electro-phoretic coating composition so as to carry the articles through the bath, applying a first potential (+ or -) to the conveyor to charge the articles and a second potential (- or +) to an electrode 46 disposed in the bath adjacent the conveyor, e.g. from first D.C. source 76, and preventing coating of the conveyor, e.g. by continuously electrically reverse polarity cleaning the conveyor by applying from second D.C. source 80 a third potential to another electrode 50 mounted adjacent another portion of the conveyor, or by using an anodized Al or Zn coated conveyor. Preferably the conveyor includes a continuous, foraminous belt 40 passing around rolls 36 and 38, being driven by conductive drive roll 38 or resilient roll 42 (urged against by springs 44); current may be transmitted to the belt directly or by brushes or a split ring to shaft 38a. Electrode 46 may be a grid or flat sheet. Prior to coating, the articles e.g. galvanized bolts may be cleaned in a tumbling mill with alumina pellets, conversion coated, pre-baked, and pre-wetted in a solution compatible with the coating composition whilst agitating. The coated articles may be baked.
