Abstract

1392441 Upgrading ilmenite LAPORTE INDUSTRIES Ltd 5 April 1972 [5 April 1971 7 Jan 1972 14 Feb 1972] 8809/71 911/72 and 6835/72 Headings C1N and C1A Ilmenite is upgraded by oxidizing to give a material of which at least 20% by wt. is pseudobrookite, reducing such that not less than 4% of the iron content is in the Fe<SP>3+</SP> state, and no metallic iron is formed, and leaching. The oxidation may be effected at 900- 1000‹ C. in O 2 or air, or under inert conditions if weathered ilmenite is used, and optionally in the presence of a compound of Li, Na, Mg, Zr or Zn. The reduction may be effected at 700- 1000‹ C. using H 2 , CH 4 or CO in a fluidized bed, or using coke, lignite, char or coal in a rotary kiln, excess reducing agent being removed magnetically. The material should be cooled quickly when the desired degree of reduction has been attained, which may be up to 40% Fe<SP>3+</SP>. Leaching may be effected at 100-108‹ C. using excess 17¢-20% HCl. Acid initially containing some Fe<SP>2+</SP> ions may be used, e.g. as obtained from an HCl wash of the leached material. The used acid may be recovered by thermal decomposition. The product may be calcined at 600-700‹ C. and/or chlorinated in fluidized bed.
