Abstract

1477840 Upgrading iron-containing titaniferous ores LAPORTE INDUSTRIES Ltd 11 Dec 1974 [21 Dec 1973] 59302/73 Heading C1A and C1N Iron-containing titaniferous material suitable for acid leaching to reduce the iron content thereof is made by oxidizing an iron-containing titaniferous ore containing metallic Fe with CO 2 -containing gas to convert the metallic iron in the ore to Fe<SP>11</SP> and removing CO evolved during said oxidation to prevent reduction of Fe<SP>11</SP> back to metallic iron. The oxidation is suitably conducted in a stream of the oxidizing gas whereby CO evolved is removed from contact with the ore. Preferably the oxidation is conducted in a fluidized bed, the fluidizing gas comprising the oxidizing gas stream. The oxidation is suitably performed at temperatures of 700-900‹ C with contact times of 1/4-3 hours. The concentration of CO 2 in contact with the ore is preferably maintained at at least 30% by volume of the gas. The ore to be treated is suitably an ilmenite or concentrate which has been subjected to a pretreatment comprising an oxidation followed by a reduction. The content of metallic iron in the ore is preferaably less than 20% weight and the iron content is essentially in the metallic and ferrous states. The material is then suitably leached with hydrochloric acid or a solution of FeCl 2 in HCl and the upgraded ore resulting from the leaching shows a resistance to breakdown into fine particles under the conditions used in the fluidized bed chlorination to produce TiCl 4 .
