Abstract

1392242 Electro-deposition of gold and its alloys TECHNIC Inc 11 July 1972 [26 July 1971] 32369/72 Heading C7B Bright gold or gold base alloy is electrolytically deposited from an aqueous solution of pH 3 to 8 containing a water-soluble gold cyanide and a chelating agent selected from those represented by the Formula: where m and n are either 1 or 2 and m + n = 3 and M is hydrogen or an alkali metal cation (such as Na or K), and those represented by the Formula: where n is 1, 2 or 3 and R is either -CH 2 COOM or and M is hydrogen or an alkali metal cation (such as Na or K), at least one R being -CH 2 COOM and at least one R being -CH 2 PO 3 M 2 . Specified alloying metals are Cu, Co and Ni. The plating solution may also contain citric or malic acid or their alkali metal, ammonium or organic amine salts or, in some Examples, citric acid and potassium citrate. Possible inorganic additives are phosphates (such as KH 2 PO 4 , K 2 HPO 4 , H 3 PO 4 , Na 2 HPO 4 , NaHPO 4 ) polyphosphates, sulphamates, fluoborates and H 3 BO 3 . Substrates that may be plated upon are (a) 12- pin transistors by barrel plating, (b) Cu-plated test pieces and (c) Ni-plated discs. In the Examples indicated, the baths contain in solution in addition to Au as KAu(CN) 2 :-(3) Ni, (4 and 6) CO (5) Co and Ni, in each case as the sulphate. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1198527.
